Tonnes of dry waste has been found dumped in an excavated site near the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, throwing up questions about how the waste has found its way into the site and who dumped it.

The Cuncolim Municipal Council has pointed out that garbage dumping is the handiwork of unscrupulous elements disposing of the waste in an unauthorised manner. CMC Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas has said that the CMC outsources the collection of garbage and waste from households and commercial establishments in the municipal area. He further claimed that the contractor has been mandated to collect the waste door-to-door and further treatment.

“The waste dumped near the Cuncolim Industrial Estate is not dumped by the civic body. We have a contractor who is mandated to collect door-to-door garbage. The garbage dumped in the waterlogged pit is the handiwork of unscrupulous elements. The civic body will find out the persons,” he said.

A visit to the site showed that garbage is dumped all around the place. As the site is waterlogged, concerns are raised that it will give rise to diseases, with locals demanding that the local civic body take care of the nuisance and stop the miscreants from dumping of waste.
