Power infrastructure seems to have failed to meet the growing requirements in Cuncolim and surrounding areas.
If the power situation at the Cuncolim industrial estate is grim and the situation not too rosy in the Cuncolim municipal area for the delay in toning up the required infrastructure, a proposal to link the Velim, Canacona and MES feeders to the 220/33KV Cuncolim substation is gathering dust in the electricity department.
The proposal to link the 33KV Velim, Canacona and MES DC feeders to the 220/33KV Cuncolim sub-station was mooted by power officials at a cost of Rs 1.53 crore, but the proposal has still not received the approval from the department.
Sources said the Velim I & II, Canacona I & II and MES I & II feeders are fed from the 220/33KV Xeldem sub-station and are frequently prone to interruptions due to the lengthy feeder. Also, the 33/11KV Cuncolim sub-station and four Nos of 33KV IDC are presently being fed from the 220/33KV sub-station.
Officials said the linking of these feeders will evacuate the power to 220/33KV Cuncolim sub-station, thereby reducing the burden on the Xeldem sub-station. It was further pointed out that the Velim sub-station, Benaulim sub-station, Carmona sub-station and the KRC sub-station will form a ring back system, promising to restore supply within SOP norms in case of failure of any feeder.
The Goan understands that the proposal to replace the ageing and worn out conductors in the municipal town area, which had to bear the brunt of frequent power outages over the years, is yet to get clearance from the government.
A senior power official said that since there was a lone bidder for the project estimated to cost over Rs three crore, the proposal has gone to the word advisory committee for a decision.
