Residents of Cuncolim have threatened to hit the streets if the government fails to compel the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Cuncolim campus to provide jobs to local youth.

Reminding that the people of Cuncolim had sacrificed six lakh square metres of land following assurances from former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar that the institute would provide employment opportunities, the citizens lamented that the NIT has gone back on its promises.

A delegation of citizens submitted a memorandum to the NIT administration demanding jobs for local youth. They lamented that the institute is offering locals only jobs such as housekeeping, gardening and sweeping through contractors.

“Today, we called on NIT officials seeking guidelines on the recruitment of skilled and unskilled candidates. They told us that the institute is supporting the local community, but we told them that we have heard such assurances for the last five years, but in vain,” said Assiz Noronha, Congress district president.

Saying that Cuncolim MLA and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has taken up cudgels for the youth of Cuncolim both within and outside the Assembly, Noronha said the people of Cuncolim would be forced to take to the streets if locals are ignored by the NIT in recruitment.

Another citizen urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to once again approach the Union Education Minister with a plea to open recruitment at the institution to locals.
