Cuncolim’s 86 industrial units to pay garbage fees

MARGAO

Come New Year and the Cuncolim Municipal Council will levy garbage fees on all the 86 units in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, a move which promises to enrich the municipal coffers by Rs four lakh a month.

The industrial units have also agreed to fund community toilets in ward Nos one and three of the Cuncolim Municipal Council under Corporate Social Responsibility. The industrial units have been further requested to fund a shed for the vendors in the market area of the town.

This was decided at a joint meeting between the Cuncolim Municipal Council led by Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas, Chief Officer Shankar Gaonkar, councillors and senior officials of the Industrial Development Corporation.

The meeting discussed the issue of levying garbage fees on the 86 units operating at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate. It was decided to categorise the industrial units in four categories and levy fees as per the number of workers employed by the units.

CO Shankar Gaonkar informed that rough estimates show that CMC may earn a revenue of Rs four lakh a month from the collection of garbage fees.

To a question, he said the garbage fees will be levied on the industrial units in the new year after municipal officials survey the number of workers employed by each of the units.

As far as the funding of the community toilets is concerned, the CO said the industrial units have agreed to fund the toilets under the CSR scheme after the civic body prepares estimates of the toilets in areas such as Talvorda, Simplear which are inhabited by the tribal communities.
