Cuncolkars hail Rebello’s initiative, seek relief from local pollution

MARGAO
Cuncolkars waging a sustained battle against pollution has welcomed the decision of retired Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court Justice Ferdino Rebello for his initiative to save Goa from destruction.

They, however, hoped that Justice Ferdino Rebello and his team will also take up the issue of pollution, both air and water pollution, plaguing the people of Cuncolim over the decades. “We are glad that Justice Ferdino, a son of Cuncolim, has taken up the initiative to save Goa. But, we also hope that he takes up the cause of Cuncolim as people from the village have been suffering from acute pollution,” informed activist Aviraj Desai.

He said Justice Rebello is not new to pollution in Cuncolim, since his residence is located just four kilometres away from the polluting Cuncolim Industrial Estate.

Meanwhile, a group of activists led by Aviraj Desai has lamented that the government failed to honour the promise to transport the hazardous zinc waste left behind at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate since the last decade and half.

“The government had promised to cart away the hazardous waste to the Pissurlem hazardous waste treatment site in October last. However, the waste has remained where it is. Not a single tonne of waste has been transported to Pissurlem,” Desai said, while demanding that the government honour its promise and give relief to the people of Cuncolim from the ill-effects of the hazardous waste.
