The Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) has ordered the contractor involved in the construction of the municipal-owned Market complex at Curchorem to stop the work for failing to follow proper safety measures at the site.
Following complaints from locals, CCMC Chairperson Jasmine Braganza and the chief officer visited the construction site and found that work was being carried out without primary safety measures at the site.
Braganza said the contractor had laid the foundation and had dug a huge trench. However, there were no safety barricades around the construction site.
As a rule, the contractor has to erect metal sheets or wooden barricades all around the construction site before starting the work. But in this case, no such firm barricades were put by the contractor and instead, there was only a green flimsy cover across two sides of the construction area, leaving the other two sides open and dangerous.
“As there were high chances of people falling into the trench, we directed the contractor to stop the construction work till the time safety measures are put in place. The contractor has assured to get things done by this weekend,” said Braganza.
