Memorandum submitted as residents warn of protests

Curchorem has witnessed growing public discontent as local residents have raised serious concerns over garbage trucks from outside the designated areas heading to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) facility at Cacora.
A group of aggrieved citizens submitted a memorandum to the Chief Officer, Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC), strongly objecting to the transportation of waste from other constituencies into their village.
Claiming that such practices are placing an unfair burden on the local environment, they have demanded an immediate ban on the entry of garbage trucks from outside areas into Curchorem as the issue has escalated beyond tolerable limits.
The memorandum, signed by over 60 residents, underscores the intensity of public concern. Locals have also issued a warning to authorities, urging swift intervention to resolve the matter. They cautioned that failure to act promptly could lead to intensified protests in the coming days.
Responding to the grievances, the Chief Officer confirmed receipt of the representation highlighting the concerns raised about the foul smell originating from the GWMC plant.
The Chief Officer, however, clarified that the facility is a state government-operated unit with a designed processing capacity of 100 tonnes per day (TPD). He claimed that there are ongoing concerns regarding its operational efficiency, as it is reportedly processing around 70 tonnes while functioning at what is described as full capacity.
The memorandum has been forwarded to higher authorities within the Waste Management Corporation for further necessary action as the municipal council has no say in the matter.
Meanwhile, the issue continues to significantly affect the local community, with residents pointing out that the unpleasant odor is disrupting the lives of the locals.
