Curtorim locals raise civic, social concerns at Congress yatra

Alemao, Patkar assure action on roads, water leakages

MARGAO

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Sunday assured residents of the Curtorim constituency that their issues”such as poor roads, water pipeline leakages, illegal parking of fishing vessels, and other local problems”will be taken up seriously.

He was speaking at the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Yatra’ meeting held in Curtorim, which was attended by GPCC President Amit Patkar, South Goa District Congress President Savio D’Silva, Curtorim Block President Mila Fernandes, Congress leader Joseph Vaz, Zilla Panchayat member Michelle Rebello, Moreno Rebello, Chirag Naik and others.

Locals told the Congress leaders that the BJP government has ignored their needs and has not solved their long-pending issues. They said the government’s lack of action has only added to their problems.

“BJP government has failed in all aspects, be it law and order or providing facilities to the public. Roads are dug again and again and are left unattended. The absence of effective inter-departmental communication is hindering progress and causing issues,” Alemao said.

Responding to concerns that some forces are trying to create religious divisions, Alemao stressed the importance of unity and said such forces must be defeated.

“Now people have come to know how ‘non state actors’ are trying to divide us. Goans have lived together and we will maintain this brotherhood,” Alemao said.

He further added: “Problem of pipeline water leakage exists everywhere. I think more than 50 percent water is wasted due to negligence in this area. BJP has failed to replace the old pipeline which was laid by the Congress government, however it boasts about fake development. Currently Goa is reeling under debt of more than Rs 35000 crore.”

GPCC President Amit Patkar said the BJP was trying to damage democracy, and all citizens must come together to protect the Constitution.

“We have witnessed the BJP’s attempts to undermine our Constitution, drafted by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. We will not let them attack our constitutional values,” Patkar said.

He added that the Congress party is getting stronger, with new leaders joining and loyal supporters standing by.

Residents also raised concerns over the conversion of No Development Zones”including paddy fields”into settlement areas. They fear this could harm the environment and affect the village’s population balance.
