With Sonsodo in the news over the Margao Municipal Council’s failure to treat the wet waste generated in the commercial capital, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Saturday has demanded a probe into the huge money spent on garbage management.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has also lodged his strong objection to the open dumping of waste near the KTC bus stand in the GSUDA land, threatening that people would stop the illegal waste dumping if the government does not act immediately to stop the nuisance.
The two MLAs descended at Sonsodo on Saturday for an inspection after the duo conducted an inspection of a comunidade land to set up a power sub station for the benefit of Fatorda, Margao and Curtorim constituencies.
After inspecting the Sonsodo waste management shed, the duo demanded to know how come the shed is full of wet waste when the Margao Municipal Council and the local MLA Digambar Kamat have been inspecting the site for the last one year.
“Things have gone from bad to worse. We have been cooperating with the Margao Municipal Council and the government to evolve a solution to Sonsodo, but in vain. Huge funds have been spent at Sonsodo under the garb of treating garbage, but the end results seemed zero”, Reginaldo said, while demanding an inquiry into the spending.
The Fatorda MLA, on the other hand, wondered how come the MMC is resorting to open dumping of garbage near the KTC land on the GSUDA acquired land. Demanding to know whether Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane has allowed waste dumping on the GSUDA-acquired land near the KTC bus stand, Sardesai has warned that people would be forced to knock the doors of the High Court if the authorities do not take action.
Both Reginaldo and Vijai pointed out that they had also come to inspect the land near Sonsodo to set up a power sub station.
“We have come for the inspection with the Comunidade attorney to explore the possibility of acquiring land admeasuring 3000 square metres for the sub station”, Reginaldo said.
A local resident, however, questioned why the authorities are only eyeing the land at Sonsodo, pointing out that the government had earlier acquired land for the burial grounds.
