Even as the government is toying with the idea of razing down the structures along the Cutbona jetty road, the Velim Panchayat on Friday issued provisional trade licences to some of the structures to obtain the licence from the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).
The decision by the Velim panchayat was taken at a meeting chaired by Sarpanch Veena Cardozo. The Sarpanch, however, is believed to have absented herself from the meeting when the matter of issuing a provisional licence for a structure reportedly owned by her family had come up for discussion.
When 'The Goan' contacted the Velim Sarpanch to shed light on the panchayat decision, Veena confirmed that the Panchayat has taken the decision to issue the provisional trade licence for a period of six months.
“After the FDA had inspected the establishments carrying out business activity in these structures, they were told to obtain the panchayat license before the FDA could issue their license. Since the Panchayat was in receipt of the applications seeking the trade licenses, we have decided to issue them the provisional licenses for a period of six months,” Veena said.
Saying the business activities in these structures are being carried out by the local residents, Veena said the panchayat will issue the trade licence for a year if the applicants obtain the FDA licence to run the business activity.
