The Dabolim Block Congress Committee on Wednesday raised strong objection over a huge line up of heavy vehicles parked along the Chicalim Airport road and demanded that heavy vehicles be allotted parking near the BITS Pilani in Zuarinagar.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday afternoon, Dabolim Block Congress Committee President Fransisco Nunes said many heavy vehicles had begun parking on one side of the Chicalim-Airport road over the past many months, causing congestion and chaos at the busy Chicalim circle. “Several heavy vehicles would arrive in the city to load cargo at MPT, but due to no-entry timings, heavy vehicles were denied entry in the city were forced to stop and park at Chicalim in the afternoon and evenings till the notified no entry time was complete,” Nunes said.
“Since a large number of vehicles arrive for transportation of huge cargo, queues of heavy vehicles have reached as far as the airport, causing traffic chaos all along the road and posing danger to the movement of small bikes and cars of parents, arriving to pick students from schools in the area.
Nunes said the MPT should make parking available in its premises, before calling for transportation. “Sometimes, the drivers park their vehicles by the roadside and go for a stroll. In the evenings, vehicles also double park on the road causing further chaos. These stationary vehicles also block the frontage of commercial shops and also cause inconvenience to pedestrian,” he said.
“There are three schools with over 2,000 students in the vicinity. Heavy vehicles should be parked near BITS Pilani, where there are no schools or residential areas in the vicinity,” insisted Nunes.
Dabolim Congress Youth President Mahesh Bhandari said a memorandum had been sent to Mormugao Dy Collector Mahadev Arondekar suggesting some changes.
“However, no action was taken by authorities to take up road works at Chicalim or on objections about parking of heavy vehicles,” said Bhandari.
