MAPUSA
Nearly one month after it was damaged and temporarily repaired, the PWD has finally decided to permanently fix the main water pipeline at Duler-Mapusa.
The department will take up repair work of the 700 mm main water pipeline early on Thursday morning and is expected to finish the work by evening.
“Work on the main water pipeline in Duler will be taken up tomorrow (Thursday) morning and will be completed by evening,” assured Dipak Borkar, Assistant Engineer, PWD (water).
Mapusa and surrounding areas may get affected due to the shut down and residents are requested to take measures to store water.
The AE informed that the department could not take up the work earlier since there was problem at Assonora water treatment plant due to burning of the motors and consequently due to electricity breakdown on account of the recent squall in Bardez.
“Parts of Bardez were already facing a lot of water problem and to repair this pipeline we had to shut down the main line. That is why we delayed taking up the work,” Borkar said.
It may be recalled that the 700 mm main pipeline supplying water from Assonora treatment plant to various constituencies in Bardez was damaged near the petrol pump in Duler on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi last month.
The PWD engineers had then taken up the work on a war footing and repaired the pipeline but failed to plug the leakage fully.
“It’s almost 28 days the work on the water pipeline has been left incomplete by the PWD. The water leaking from the pipeline gets accumulated at the spot and dirty water enters into the pipeline which is supplied to homes,” said Shekar Naik, a resident of Mapusa.
He said since the pipeline runs close to the main arterial road in the city and causes heavy traffic jams in the area. The place has also become prone to accidents, informed Naik.
“The PWD should take the matter into consideration on priority and get it done,” he added.
Local councillor Martin Carrasco informed that the PWD has decided to take up the work and the pipeline will hopefully be repaired by Thursday evening.
