Hoisting the national flag on Independence Day has traditionally been an honour granted to ministers and MLAs of the ruling party in different talukas across the State.
However, Canacona will be the only taluka in the State to feature an opposition MLA unfurling the national flag at the official function in the taluka headquarters.
Canacona’s Congress MLA Isidore Fernandes has been given this honour by virtue of being the lone MLA of virtually the entire taluka.
Incidentally, the Sattari mamlatdar is also the only government official to be given the honour to officiate at the flag hoisting ceremony of Independence Day in Sattari taluka, even though the taluka is represented by Health Minister and Valpoi MLA Vishwajit Rane and his father, Poriem’s Congress MLA and former chief minister Pratapsing Rane.
In a notification, the State government listed out those ministers and MLAs who would officiate at the flag hoisting ceremony of Independence Day at the various taluka headquarters at 9.15 am on August 15.
IT Minister Rohan Khaunte (Mapusa), Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar (Bicholim), PWD Minister Ramkrishna alias Sudin Dhavlikar (Ponda), Cancona MLA Isidore Fernandes (Cancona), Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho (Vasco), TCP Minister Vijay Sardessai (Margao), Tourism Minister Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar (Pernem), Sattari Mamletdar (Valpoi), Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral (Quepem), Sanvordem MLA Deepak Pauskar (Dharbandora) and Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar (Sanguem).
Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes claimed it is yet another honour given to him, after he had also been given the opportunity to preside over as speaker at a recent assembly session.
“It is a great honour and it’s also an honour to the people of Canacona, with the government asking me, their elected representatives of Canacona, to unfurl the national flag on Independence Day. I will certainly discharge the honour with great dignity,” replied Fernandes, on being asked to officiate at the flag hoisting ceremony of Independence Day at Canacona.
