A vendor was apparently shoved by Municipal Inspector, Tayo Gadekar in the new vegetable market in the morning. The vendor, Anuisiya Deulkar immediately lodged a complaint against the market inspector.
Some of the local vendors who have got a place inside the market criticized the way the allotments have been made in the new market, which clearly appeared to favour the migrants.
“Many of our local deserving vendors have not been accommodated inside the market,” said Satyaveti Kavlekar, a local vendor from Guirim.
For Sarita Pednekar, another local vendor, it was a day of poor business in the new market, as she could hardly get any customers.
There were many others like her who couldn’t make business on Sunday in the indoor market.
“One reason could be that people may not be aware that we have been shifted inside the market,” said Pednekar.
She said migrant vendors, who have got large space in the market, were selling veggies at competitive rate, which could be another reason for poor business.
“The migrant wholesalers deliberately lowered price to cut us to size with an aim to push us out of business,” she said.
Kavlekar blamed the local vendors to some extent for the current mess.
“Many times our locals support these migrants and not one of our own,” she said.
She recounted an incident when she took a hiatus from the Mapusa market for two years.
“None of the local vendors were ready to help me to regain a spot in the market,” she said.
