Even as Goa continues to experience a sluggish monsoon this season, Department of Drinking Water (DDW) Minister Subhash Phal Dessai on Monday assured that there will be no shortage of drinking water anywhere in the State, saying the recent rainfall has substantially replenished the reservoirs and improved water availability.
The minister said the government is closely monitoring the storage levels in all major dams and is working in coordination with the Water Resources Department (WRD) to ensure efficient management of the State's water resources.
"There is no reason for people to worry. The rainfall may have been slow initially, but the recent showers have significantly replenished the dams. We are confident that there will be no water shortage anywhere in the State," Phal Dessai said.
He added that the DDW and the WRD are maintaining close coordination to continuously assess reservoir levels and plan water distribution in advance.
"We are in constant touch with the WRD Minister and officials. Our departments are coordinating on a regular basis so that water resources are managed efficiently," he said.
Phal Dessai said the government will implement a series of water conservation and management measures to safeguard supplies through the coming months.
Referring to the State's largest reservoir, the minister said that if the present spell of rainfall continues for another week, the Selaulim dam is expected to overflow.
"If the rains continue at the present pace for another week, Selaulim is likely to overflow, which will further strengthen the State's water security," he said.
Goa had witnessed concerns over reservoir levels earlier this season due to a delayed and uneven monsoon.
However, continuous rainfall over the past few weeks especially in the catchment area has led to a steady rise in storage levels across major dams, easing fears of a drinking water shortage.
