Dean: Drastic drop in admissions at GMC

PANAJI

In positive news to the grim Covid situation in the State, the number of daily admissions in Goa Medical College (GMC) has reduced by half in recent days.

Speaking to media, GMC Dean Dr S M Bandekar said, 68 patients were admitted in the hospital in the last 24 hours as compared to as many as 135 admissions recorded a few days back.

Bandekar said that at present, there are over 30 beds vacant in the super specialty block at GMC and in all there were 768 patients undergoing treatment at the premier hospital.

“No patient is made to sleep on the floor or on stretchers any more”, he said.

Taking a safe stand on whether the second Covid had started to show a declining trend, Bandekar said “let us wait for a few more days to come to a conclusion. It is premature to comment on this at present”, he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Bandekar also said the State machinery was gearing up for the third wave of Covid pandemic which experts opine is likely to affect the below 18 age group and the peri-urban and rural population.

He said the Health Department would hold awareness programmes for the benefit of people.

On ‘Black Fungus’, he said no additional cases of mucormycosis disease had been found in the State. The disease was identified in 6 Covid patients who were undergoing treatment at GMC -- one of them expired two days ago.

“His death cannot be attributed only to ‘black fungus’,” he said.

In addition there was one more request for Liposomal Amphotericin, the injection used for treating black fungus, from a private hospital, Bandekar said adding 100 vials of the injection have been allotted to Goa by the Centre.
