MARGAO
Margao Municipal Council’s move to waive off lakhs of rupees of payments of the sopo collector has not found favour with the Director of Municipal Administration.
In fact, the office of the DMA has written to the Margao Municipal Council to take a resolution justifying its move to waive off around Rs 30-odd lakhs citing Covid-19 pandemic.
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed The Goan that the DMA’s correspondence will be placed before the Council meeting for a decision.
He said the DMA took the decision following complaints received from former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho.
To a question, the Chief Officer said the DMA apparently want the MMC to justify its decision to waive off the huge revenue due from the sopo contractor.
The MMC decision taken at the last meeting had kicked a storm after the opposition had bitterly protested and termed the decision as a sell-out for the defaulter sopo contractor.
