As the stage is set for the first-ever visit by Waste Management Minister Antanasio Monserrate to Sonsodo on Tuesday, the Margao Municipal Council officials and workers went on an overdrive to spruce up the waste dumping site.
The Minister may not expect a red carpet welcome at the garbage dumping site, but he may find the road leading to the waste treatment plant clean and garbage-free.
An army of MMC workers was deployed at Sonsodo with a clear brief to spruce up the roads and lift away the waste and litter from the roadside. If sources are to be believed, the workers went about sweeping the entire road leading to the Sonsodo plant.
Specific instructions were handed out by the MMC Sanitary Section to the workers to lift away dry waste and litter from the roadside. The place around the baling machines was also cleaned ahead of the minister’s visit.
By evening, MMC Chief Officer, Agnelo Fernandes, along with the municipal engineers descended on Sonsodo to ensure that the stage is finally set for the minister’s visit to the site. “We have held discussions on the minister’s visit and how to go about addressing the grievances vis-Ã -vis solid waste management. We expect the minister to address all issues plaguing Sonsodo,” remarked an official.
The MMC will be hoping that Monserrate will announce the decision to approve the project to cart out the piled up waste inside the plant and remediate the same at a cost of Rs three crore.
Civic officials also hope the minister will take a favourable decision to permit the MMC to transport the daily wet waste to the Cacora plant as and when commissioned by the Goa Waste Management Corporation.
