No support from the Church, Medium of Instruction (MoI), non-alliance with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), rebellion within the Party, amendments to the Tenancy Act were some of the major factors that led to the defeat of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates in the Assembly polls gone by, the defeated MLAs and ministers stated.
The reasons were pointed out at the post-poll review meeting of the defeated candidates held at BJP headquarters in Panaji on Monday. The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, was attended by Party’s Central Observer B L Santosh, State President Vinay Tendulkar, General Secretary Sadanand Shet Tanawade, among others.
Sources informed that in Pernem, issues like amendments to the Tenancy Act, MoI, and non-alliance with MGP were the major factors for defeat of former chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar and environment minister Rajendra Arlekar.
While Arlekar pointed out that the delay in announcing his candidature led to some of the BJP supporters moving towards MGP, he was the most affected by the issue of amendments to the Tenancy Act. However, Parsekar said that his close associates betrayed him by working against him. His disconnect with people also affected him to a very large extent in the polls.
As far as Bardez is concerned, two former ministers “ Dilip Parulekar (Saligao) and Dayanand Mandrekar (Siolim) stated that no support from the Church led to their defeat as there a major chunk of Catholic voters in these constituencies. Similar was the case with Porvorim and Fatorda constituencies where minorities voted against the BJP leading to their defeat, pointed out the defeated candidates.
Sources informed that former minister Mahadev Naik also pointed out that the minority community voted against him. Secondly, he pointed out that MGP took away a chunk of his votes.
Denial of ticket to former Canacona MLA affected BJP in constituencies like Sanguem, Sanvordem and Quepem where there is a sizeable population of the tribal community, informed sources. Secondly, the Sanguem candidate also stated that his own partymen worked against him.
As far as corrective measures are concerned, all the candidates were advised to remain connected with their electors, informed sources.
