Delegation meets Minister, wants Hospicio handed over to Caritas for medical centre

Delegation meets Minister, wants Hospicio handed over to Caritas for medical centre

MARGAO
A delegation of citizens on Friday called on Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira with a plea to hand over the heritage Hospicio building to Caritas to run a medical centre to maintain the rich legacy left behind by Hospicio founder Padre Miranda.

Sequeira later told the delegation that he would convey their sentiments and demand to the government for necessary action.

The delegation comprising of Mackenzie D’Costa, Santan Rodrigues and others made a strong plea with the Minister to use his influence with the government for the handing over of the old Hospicio heritage building along with the Chapel to the Church organ Caritas.

They pointed out that Caritas had over a year ago petitioned to the Director of Health Services to hand over a portion of the Hospicio heritage building to run a medical centre at Hospicio, which had catered to the health needs of the people of South Goa since the institution was founded by Padre Miranda over 150 years ago.

Meanwhile, a number of people called on the Environment Minister during his Friday darbar in the South Goa District Collectorate. Issues pertaining to the TCP department, Forests, regularisation of houses, etc were taken up with the Minister on Friday.

The Minister later told the media that the public toilets and amenities in the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative complex in the South Goa district Collectorate will be repaired by May this year. “We expect the contractor to repair the toilets on the ground floor of the building. I am monitoring the ongoing work with the contractor as well as with the PWD officials,” he said.

He said a request has been made to de-notify the road from Nagoa-Raje as national highway in view of the heavy traffic plying on the Nuvem bypass.

When asked to shed light on the water problem faced by the people of Utorda in his Nuvem constituency, Sequeira shot back, “I have come to know of the issue through the media. Neither the local panch members nor any of the residents had brought the issue to his notice. We have placed order for 5,000 overhead water tanks. The same will be distributed to the deserving people.”
