The Curtorim Biodiversity Management Committee has conveyed to the Goa State Biodiversity Board that it is not enough to declare the lakes and fields of biodiversity importance in Curtorim as biodiversity heritage sites but to also give the same tag to the khazan lands, springs and important village landmarks.

While the Chairperson of the Curtorim Biodiversity Management Committee J Santan Rodrigues has had discussions with the State Biodiversity Board on the issue after a meeting of the committee members, Curtorim Sarpanch Milagres Rodrigues has said he would convene a meeting of the Panchayat and the committee to demand biodiversity heritage sites status to the khazan lands, springs and important village landmarks.

The Sarpanch told The Goan on Saturday that since the village biodiversity management committee had recommended certain proposals to be declared as heritage sites, the Panchayat and the committee will stick to the decisions. “Since the State Biodiversity Board had given 60 days to file suggestions and objections to the notification, we will file our suggestions and objections within the time frame”, Milagres said.

Curtorim Biodiversity Management Committee Chairperson J Santan Rodrigues echoed similar sentiments, saying the committee will stand by the recommendations already forwarded to the State Biodiversity Board.

“Our members had met recently and discussed the omission of recommendations made by the committee to declare the khazans, springs and important village landmarks as biodiversity heritage sites. We will stick to the recommendations”, he added.

By a notification, the Goa State Biodiversity Board had last week proposed to declare lakes and fields of biodiversity importance in Curtorim village as biodiversity heritage sites.
