The South Goa collector had earlier ordered the demolition of the houses and the demolition was to have begun at 7 am.
When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Dipali Naik confirmed to The Goan that the demolitions had
been kept in abeyance, following directives from the collector.
Sources said the demolitions may have been kept on hold on account of ongoing efforts to regularise illegal structures across the State.
According to sources, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) had served a demo
lition notice to the residents of the 56 houses under Section 184 of the Municipality Act.
The affected residents had applied for regularisation under the Goa Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Ordinance 2016 and were also fighting a civil suit case before the Civil Judge senior division in the Vasco courts against the demolition. The residents had also challenged the demolition order issued by MMC in the High Court, but the high court rejected the petition filed by the affected residents.
