PORVORIM
A two-storey house in the 20-point settlement at Socorro has been under demolition since Tuesday, a process that began nearly two years ago.
The Socorro panchayat first started demolition in October 2023, but the district court stayed the order later that month.
The panchayat then moved the high court, which directed demolition on 12 November 2024.
The house owner, Chari, gave an undertaking to demolish the structure but later said he lacked technical manpower, promising to vacate by 10 February 2025 to let the panchayat proceed. The demolition squad was to complete the work by 15 March, with a report due on 21 March.
On 18 June, the high court was informed that demolition could not proceed due to the absence of officials.
The court then directed the Bardez Deputy Collector and Socorro panchayat secretary to complete the demolition by 7 July, with support from PWD, electricity department and police. The demolition began on Tuesday and continued on Wednesday.
