Dengue cases drop in March; officials credit ground action

Goa has reported a significant drop in dengue cases this March, with only four patients detected across the State in the month.

The Directorate of Health Services confirmed the numbers, noting that last March had seen seven cases, while February had recorded 21.

Dr Kalpana Mahatme, Deputy Director who heads the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme in the State, attributed the decline to aggressive field measures.

Teams have been targeting mosquito breeding sites, destroying stagnant water pockets, and conducting awareness drives on hygiene. Local panchayats have also been roped in to support the campaign, she said.

The four March cases were reported from Margao, Cansaulim, Cortalim, and Curtorim. Officials said most patients in the first quarter of 2026 were migrant workers living in construction sites or temporary settlements.

Open water storage at these locations are suspected to have created breeding grounds for mosquitoes here. Workers arriving from dengue‑prone States have also contributed.

Authorities stressed the importance of household vigilance. Residents have been urged to clean stored water twice a week, cover containers tightly, and use stored water within seven days.

Flower pots, refrigerator trays, and other hidden spots must be checked regularly even as health workers will continue door‑to‑door visits to reinforce these precautions.

The State’s monthly dengue tally has shown a steady decline compared to previous years. In January 2026, six cases were reported, followed by just one in February and four in March. By contrast, March 2024 had 22 cases, while March 2025 saw seven.

Officials say the numbers reflect the impact of sustained public health interventions.  “Community participation is crucial. Without it, dengue cannot be controlled,” Dr Mahatme emphasised.

With summer approaching, the health department has intensified surveillance to prevent resurgence.
