There has been a steep rise in the suspected cases of dengue (reported at Vasco health centre and Cortalim health sub centre) in Mormugao taluka this year compared to the previous year’s record in for July and August. Both the centres are taking steps to contain the cases.
Statistics reveal that this year around 200 cases of suspected dengue have been reported in Mormugao taluka. Of these, 12 were confirmed cases in July and August.
In 2017, there were around 69 cases of suspected dengue reported.
There was an outbreak of dengue in a Chicalim school in July and a student lost his life. Both health centres had immediately taken steps to begin anti-larval drives to combat the outbreak.
In August, cases of suspected dengue were reported from Voddant near Goa Shipyard Ltd. Vasco Urban health centre took all necessary steps to prevent an outbreak in the area.
When contacted, Health Officer of Chicalim Cottage Hospital, Dr Rajendra Borkar, informed that in July 66 cases were reported at Vasco health centre and 13 at Cortalim health centre. Sixty-five were admitted in hospital and eight cases were confirmed to be of dengue, he stated.
Borkar informed further that in August this year there were around 103 suspected cases from Vasco and 18 from Cortalim. Of these, 5 cases were confirmed.
He said that 109 people were being treated at Chicalim Cottage Hospital. Correspondingly, he said, there were only 7 cases reported in July and 62 in August in 2017.
