Seven staff of the Porvorim Fire Station are among eight cases to have tested positive for dengue in the Housing Board area of Porvorim, causing alarm in the locality.
The Porvorim Primary Health Centre (PHC) has identified three mosquito breeding sites in the area and on Thursday, issued a third notice to the company constructing the Porvorim Town Square (PTS) project for failing to maintain cleanliness at the site.
Porvorim PHC Health Officer Dr Shikandar Talwar has now warned of a rise in dengue case in Porvorim if cleanness not maintained in the area.
When contacted, Dr Talwar confirmed that eight persons from Porvorim have tested positive for dengue in the area near Hanuman Temple in the new market complex.
“The first case was reported at the PTS project, when the site supervisor of the construction company contracted dengue. Now, seven staff members of Porvorim Fire Station have been affected with dengue,” said Dr Talwar.
Dr Talwar stated that massive construction activities are going around the Hanuman Temple area.
“Breeding of mosquitoes has been reported at food carts opposite Goa Cricket Academy, the Panchayat library construction site and the PTS project,” said Dr Talwar.
“The company entrusted with the task of constructing the PTS project was fined twice for violating cleanliness rules of health department. The PHC imposed a fine on the construction company to the tune of Rs 1 lakh on December 10, 2025, and Rs 50,000 on June 8.”
“Notices were also issued to the company for failing to comply with instructions of the PHC on December 18, 2025, and again on July 11. Now, 7 staff members of the Porvorim Fire Station have tested positive for dengue,” said Dr Talwar.
“On Thursday, the PHC issued a third notice to the construction company, with copies to the Penha de Franca Panchayat, Directorate of Health Services and the Collector of North Goa.”
“If the cleanliness is not maintained by the construction company in its premises, there could be a rise in dengue case at Porvorim in the days to come,” warned Dr Talwar.
The PHC health officer mentioned that the health centre has begun preventive steps to contain spread of dengue cases, on detection of the dengue cases.
“The PHC has begun anti-larval measures such as spraying of medicine in stagnant water, while also carrying out fumigation July 18 and July 20 in and around the PTS project, Panchayat Library construction site and Goa Cricket Academy,” he said.
