The BJP’s task of selecting a candidate for the ZP polls in Khola has been made easy with Deputy Chief Minister Babu Kavlekar and Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes having jointly shortlisted sitting Khola ZP member Shanu Velip.
Velip’s candidature was shortlisted after a marathon meeting with all aspiring candidates to the BJP ticket for the Khola ZP seat, which includes the villages of Shristhal and Agonda (Canacona constituency), Khola and Betul-Naqueri (Quepem constituency), at the residence of Kavlekar.
The seven candidates -- Pandhari Prabhudessai (Khola), Rupesh Prabhudessai (Khola), Sadanand Naik (Khola), Suraj Naikgaunkar (Agonda), Krishna Velip (Khola), Sanju Naik (Shristhal) and Shanu Velip(Khola) -- seeking the BJP’s ticket to the Khola seat were first heard, then allowed to interact among themselves and were finally addressed by the two legislators.
Quepem BJP block president Sanjay Velip and Canacona BJP block president Mahesh (Govind) Naik were also present and expressed their views on the probable candidates.
It was later decided to forward the name of sitting ZP member Shanu Velip, who incidentally got elected the last time with Congress strongly rallying support in his favour.
“It is always better to have a common single candidate acceptable to all aspiring candidates. Hence, we have convened this hearing and narrowed down to one candidate,” said Kavlekar.
Dy Speaker Fernandes also expressed his satisfaction in getting a consensus BJP candidate to fight the Khola ZP polls.
