In the midst of the contaminated creek water invading the beach, hundreds, if not thousands of visitors, as usual descended at the world class Colva beach on Thursday.

In the absence of any mechanism put in place to drain the contaminated water, the beach played host to a pool of stagnant waters, throwing up a million dollar question – how will the Tourism Department or the Water Resources Department drain the stagnant water from the beach.

Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas along with senior officials of the Water Resources Department had on Wednesday inspected the contaminated creek and the pool of water stagnating on the beach.

So far, no action has been forthcoming from the authorities as the stagnant water came back to haunt the authorities on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz, who visited the Colva beach on Thursday, said the world class beach is in need of urgent attention as the situation can lead to health hazard. “A certain portion of the beach needs to be immediately sealed and cleaning of the creek should take place. I was shocked to see the state of the beach and with stagnant water, raw sewage, besides animals on the beach,” he said.

He added: “This beach, which is very close to the hearts of all the people of Salcete, is now losing its charm. Colva beach is in a mess and there is no control. The Health services needs to act. The situation should be declared as a disaster.”
