The April 9 fire incident that had forced the residents to move out to safety.
MARGAO
It’s little over four months since residents of Dawood building at Khareband-Margao were told to evacuate for safety after the decades-old building was engulfed by a major fire on April 9 last.
Since then, beleaguered residents must have taken shelter with their relatives or in rented premises after locking their tenements at the Dawood building. However, the residents have not stopped getting the electricity and water bills.
To their shock and surprise, the residents are regularly receiving power and electricity bills ,despite the fact that they no longer inhabit in the building.
A resident Abdul Jamil Shaikh told The Goan that he has received his second water bill despite the fact that he hasn’t used the tap water since the authorities directed them to move out of the building. “I was shocked to receive a bill amounting to Rs 343 for use of water from July 9, 2025 to August 12, 2025, including sewerage charges. How come the PWD has raised the bill when my family is not staying in the building”, Abdul questioned.
Some of the beleaguered residents have approached Margao Municipal ward Councillor Deepali Sawal for her intervening. Deepali told The Goan that her inquiries with officials of PWD, Water supply have revealed that the residents have not yet applied for disconnection of water supply. “The PWD officials informed that the residents are yet to apply for disconnection. Hence, I have now requested the residents to write letters to the PWD to disconnect the water supply till they return back to the building”, the Councillor added.
