Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Wednesday morning announced that a dedicated team of volunteers will be stationed at the busiest Ganesh visarjan site at Baina beach to collect flowers and Nirmalya from idols after immersion.
Amonkar was speaking to reporters following a joint inspection of the Visarjan site with Dy Collector Bhagwant Karmali, Mamlatdar, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, police and traffic officials, representatives from Gammon India, Drishti lifeguards and the electricity department.
“Baina beach is one of the busiest Visarjan sites, attracting devotees from Baina, Vasco and nearby areas. With the rising number of idols, there are certain issues that must be resolved to ensure a smooth Visarjan. We are taking maximum precautions and involving all relevant departments to avoid any inconvenience or untoward situation,” Amonkar said.
Highlighting the recurring issue of flowers, Nirmalya and other items like incense stick boxes washing back to shore after immersion, Amonkar said a team of volunteers from nearby wards will be tasked with collecting them during visarjan.
“We have asked the MMC to provide a vehicle, and the collected Nirmalya will be buried at an identified spot to respect religious sentiments,” he added.
Other measures discussed include additional lighting and focus lights at the site, levelling of approach roads by the PWD, deployment of more Drishti lifeguards with a vehicle, and the installation of a large floating ramp for immersing big and small idols to prevent casualties during high tide.
Amonkar said law and order arrangements will be made in coordination with the police and Dy Collector’s office and appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe and smooth visarjan.
