Perhaps for the first time in the market history, Margao Municipal Council-owned New Market remained opened on a Sunday.
And, if the president of the Margao New Market Association President, Vinod Shirodkar, is to be believed, the New Market will remain always remain open on Sundays henceforth.
Given that this is perhaps the first time in the history of the Portuguese-era market that the New Market was open on a Sunday, a couple of shops in the hub of the commercial capital were found open today.
Shopkeepers opened their shutters on Sunday morning in line with the decision of the traders to keep the market open on Sundays. And, there were traders who came to clean the premises after a long closure in view of the Covid situation.
“The Association approached the Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar after it took the decision to keep the market open on Sundays. Since today was the first Sunday, only a few shops and stalls were open,” Shirodkar said, adding that the market will now remain open on all Sundays in the future.
The New Market plays host to around 400-plus shops and stalls, and is considered the business hub of the commercial capital.
