Claiming there had been no development in the last three years, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar on Monday said many projects worth crores of rupees would soon be taken up in all wards of the municipality.

“It is for the first time in the history of MMC that we have received administrative approval for works worth Rs 8 crore under the 14th Finance Commission and I thank Urban Development Minister Milind Naik for extending help to us.”

“There are still some more files for works of around Rs 4 crore which are under process and in the next 10-15 days, more approvals are likely to be obtained by MMC. Besides, we will also receive more funds under 14th Finance Commission in January,” said Gaonkar, while speaking to reporters.

“We are getting Rs 5 crore for the market complex at Sada and we will take up the new fish market complex at Vasco and Baina. Besides, we are also taking up the project of the Baina Power House commercial complex. The old fish market at Vasco will be developed to place all vendors under one roof and some more major projects will be undertaken in all wards,” said Gaonkar.

Stating that all councillors faced difficulties in undertaking development for three years, Gaonkar said when he took over as chairperson, he decided that development would be his main agenda.

“I had also assured my councillors that I would get sanctions for all projects so that development can kick off in all wards.”

“Within 15 days, I got approvals and works are also being tendered. If this had to happen three years ago, Vasco would have seen a lot of development by now. If a person is dedicated, adamant and patient, everything is possible,” said the MMC chairperson.
