Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander chose to pat his men for their policing performance on various fronts including crime detection, narcotics control and traffic policing. But he also laced the accolades with a note of caution against errant behaviour of some in the wake of recent incidents of brutality against civilians.
Speaking at the Goa Police Rising Day function held on Thursday at the police headquarters which was graced by Speaker Pramod Sawant, Dr Chander appreciated the work of the Anti-Narcotic Cell which booked over 200 cases this year alone and seized nearly 80 kilograms of various drugs.
He also patted the entire force for its achievement of over 84 per cent crime detection rate in the current year but at the same time he cautioned individual policemen to follow the letter and spirit of the law while dealing with the public in an obvious reference to recent incidents in which police brutality was exposed in an incident in Cuncolim and at the Fatorda stadium during an ISL match. Chander, himself the prime protaganist behind the popular Traffic Sentinel Scheme, reserved particular praise for the Traffic Cell for displaying efficiency in ensuring the citizen police scheme is implemented seamlessly.
Several individual officers and members of the constabulary were awarded the DGP’s Insignia for their performance. Three police stations - Panaji, Curchorem and Bicholim - were awarded the first, second and third place respectively for the quality of policing in their respective jurisdictions through the year. A parade and march past display was the highlight of the celebrations held at the grounds inside the police headquarters with Police Band in action.
