DGP seeks to know when Hyderabad police sought help

DRUGS PROBE

PANAJI

With Goa Police leaving no stone unturned to come out clean on allegations that they refused to cooperate with Telangana police into the drugs probe, Director General of Goa Police Jaspal Singh has sent a communiqué to his counterparts seeking details about any request for assistance from the State police.

Singh claimed his police force had in fact approached the Hyderabad City Police informing them about Curlies beach shack owner Edwin Nunes’ arrest and if they need his custody as he is wanted by Hyderabad police.

“As per our inquiry that he (Nunes) is involved in Hyderabad. We took proactive action and wrote to Telangana police on September 1 if they require his custody (on transfer warrant),” Singh said. Nunes is currently in jail for alleged smuggling and use of the banned substance on his premises leading to BJP leader Sonali Phogat’s death on August 23. Goa's counterparts said they are in the process to take his custody on transfer warrant and that their team is working to crack down on drug gangsters working from their safe haven in Goa.

In response to Hyderabad City Commissioner C V Anand’s allegation that Goa Police did not cooperate with them in its ongoing probe that saw the arrest of Anjuna local Preetesh Borkar on August 16, DGP Singh has sought details.

“We have sent him an email wishing to know in which case/s, did they not get any cooperation from Goa Police. We haven’t received any response so far,” the DGP said, emphasizing they have always been cooperative with the investigation team from any part of the country. Borkar’s family has alleged he was kidnapped in broad daylight from Anjuna on August 1 and his arrest was shown two weeks later.

The Goan spoke to a few officers in the Hyderabad police, who said they are drafting a detailed reply for Goa Police in the matter. “We will send them a comprehensive reply about what all happened during the investigation of the drugs case, and the accused who were underground. We had to lay a trap to lure them (Borkar) to come to our state through which our investigation would proceed. A lot of time and money has been invested to ensure culprits are caught,” an officer said. The Hyderabad police meanwhile are yet to make a media statement about Singh’s statement to local media.
