DGP warned not to indulge in politics

MAPUSA
Condemning the threatening tone of the Director General of Police against peace-loving people of Goa, the Goencho Avaaz (GA) on Sunday said the senior police officer should focus on the law and order in the State rather than issuing political statements.

The GA also said the statement of the DGP indicates poor management and control of the Chief Minister over his police chief and hold over his officers.

“Such blatant political bickering and acting as the spokesperson of the government to push for destructive projects is in total violation of the rules and regulations laid down with respect to the functioning of government servants as far as policy matters are concerned,” the GA said in a statement jointly signed by Viriato Fernandes and Swapnesh Sherlekar, both co-convenors.

“The DGP is well advised to confine himself to his uniform and law and order and not to indulge in political statements. He should be aware that he is responsible to the people of the State and not to protect the interests of the crony capitalists who are hell-bent on pushing for destructive projects meant to destroy Goa for the sole purpose of reaping profits with active support of the politicians,” they added in the statement.

On Saturday, DGP Mukesh Kumar Meena in a media briefing at the police headquarters questioned public protest against the three controversial linear projects in the State and further reiterated that Goa Police will provide security to these works.

The top police officer also hinted at taking stern action against those who protested at Chandor on the night of November 1.

The GA further advised the police chief to try and tackle the poor crime situation in the State rather than get into the political shoes of his masters.

“The rising crime graph related to drugs, rapes, murders, gambling, etc is a stark reminder that the DGP has a lot to answer, rather than threaten action against the peace-loving people of Goa who are justly appealing to the government to stop the destruction,” Sherlekar said.

“We hope such statements and threats are not related to some post-retirement assignments, which have become a norm in today’s functioning of government officers,” he added.

The GA said such political statements and threats will only harm the good relations and respect the general public in Goa have for the police personnel in Goa.

“Instead, the police chief should look after the welfare of the police force in Goa and solve the problem related to promotions and poor facilities doled out to the state police,” the GA statement said.
