Five held for rioting and assaulting police; no untoward incident reported on Tuesday

The police have also arrested five local residents of Dicarpale under various sections of the IPC for rioting and assaulting the police personnel since last night. The police have also attached around 16 motorcycles of local residents, which were found parked near the scene of violent incidents last night.
Margao Sub-divisional Police officer, DySP Dinraj Govekar said accused Avinash Gunjekar has been arrested and booked for the offence of attempt to murder. He said though police force was stationed at Dicarpale as a precautionary measure, no untoward incident has been reported from the area on Tuesday.
Maina-Curtorim police said those who were arrested for last night’s rioting were Peter Colaco, Rosario Carvalho, Moushim Zamkandi, Prakash Naik and Edwin Dias. They were arrested under section 143, 147, 148, 452, 427, 504, 506, 338, 436, 186, 332, 353 read with section 149 of the IPC and under section 8 (B) of the Highway Act. All the five persons have been remanded to a day in police custody.
DySP Govekar said the police have registered case of rioting against members of the crowd who pelted stones and attacked the police. “The police is investigating both the case, the assault case and the case of rioting,” he added.
Replying to a question, DySP Govekar said the police did make an attempt to arrest Avinash after he assaulted Jason Vales, but the accused was not found at home. “But, the crowd was not ready to listen to the police. They insisted that the accused be arrested and brought before them. We did conduct a search, but he was not found there,” the DySP said, while attributing the violent incident to mob psychology. Meanwhile, residents of Dicarpale blamed the police for the violent incident in the locality on Monday night, saying the incident could have been avoided if the police had to arrest the accused immediately. They also pointed out that the police lathi charged the people and damaged motorcycles parked along the road near the spot of the violence.
