Congratulating the new Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar on his initiative of a massive drive for recovery, former chairperson Deepak Naik on Thursday said he had taken several measures to strengthen the council’s coffers.

Reacting to statements by Gaonkar on Wednesday about the weak financial position at MMC, Naik said the MMC funds at the time of his voluntary resignation was around Rs 8 crore.

“I am probably the only MMC chairperson who had managed to keep excess money in the form of a fixed deposit in the bank to cater to salaries of the MMC staff for the next few months well in advance,” said Naik.

Recalling his experience while taking over as MMC Chairperson, Naik said he was in the same state and had to take extreme steps to recover dues to improve the financial condition of MMC.

“I had to put in a lot of efforts towards recovery during my term and I also had to take up a plan to seal a big company like IOCL to recover their huge outstanding.”

“We managed to recover a huge outstanding amount and when I voluntarily tendered my resignation, the balance salary saving grants of around Rs 1.8 crore was made as a bank fixed deposit so that MMC could be well positioned to offer staff salaries for two months in advance.”

He also informed that GPF and CPF funds of Rs 4.5 crore were deposited in the bank account.

“Thirdly, 27 MMC staff who had retired and were not settled for a long time. During my tenure, we settled them and spent around Rs 3 crore on that. This was possible only due to recovery.”

“When I had voluntarily resigned as chairperson, the bank balance including of salary reserve fund , GPF and CPF funds was around Rs 8 crore. It is not like I emptied the bank balance of MMC before my resignation and made it zero. There were funds in the MMC treasury,” said Naik.

“Every month if salaries are to be paid, MMC staff must work full-fledged towards recovery and there should be no interference during the recovery process. Gaonkar has taken a good initiative and there should be no bias during recovery from anyone and it should be a uniform process,” Naik added.
