The Rumdamol village panchayat on Monday commissioned a two-tonne garbage digester in the village, with hopes being raised that the project will help cap the garbage woes affecting the housing board area.

Inaugurated at the hands of Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro in the presence of Rumdamol Sarpanch Avita Chodankar, ZP member Ulhas Tuemkar, panchayat members and citizens, the project has been funded under the 14th Finance Commission.

The project has cost the panchayat around Rs 1 crore, including Rs 70 lakh for the digester and the balance funds to construct the shed.

In his address, Faleiro said the Rumdamol panchayat has taken the golden step in its history by setting up the garbage digester. Saying that the panchayat has been grappling to address the burning garbage problem over the years, Faleiro exuded confidence that the big step taken by the panchayat will help tide over the problem.

Sarpanch Avita thanked the Block Development Officer, Amitesh Shirwaikar, Zilla Panchayat member Ulhas Tuemkar, panchayat secretary besides the local MLA for extending all cooperation to implement the project.

She said the automatic waste composting machine was installed around a month ago and the same is officially commissioned on Monday after assessing the efficacy of the digester. Exuding confidence that the digester will help resolve 99 per cent of the garbage problem plaguing the Housing Board area, the sarpanch made an appeal to the people of the neighbouring panchayats to stop dumping their waste in the panchayat jurisdiction.

ZP member Ulhas Tuemkar complimented the Rumdamol panchayat for effectively utilising the Finance Commission grants when many a panchayat body had failed to utilise the grants. He said the Rumdamol panchayat will now be entitled to receive more grants under the 15th Finance Commission.
