Hundreds of persons with disabilities from across Mormugao Taluka registered for the Special Unique Disability ID camp organised by the Directorate of Social Welfare in collaboration with Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of the central government.
The camp for identification and assessment of persons with disabilities and registration for the Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID) saw people with disabilities arriving in several buses organised by different panchayats in Mormugao Taluka.
Social Welfare Minister Milind Naik who was present for the occasion, was visibly moved at the event and said it was the best programme of his entire political career.
Dy Director of Social Welfare Tahaa Haaziq said the social welfare department is trying to reach out to maximum disabled persons in Goa.
“Six camps were already conducted in North Goa. This is the 12th camp and we will have three more camps in South Goa.”
“We are inviting persons with disabilities and they will be registered and assisted by a professional team from the Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation, Government of India, who will check the items they require like wheelchair, crutches, artificial limbs, walkers, hearing aids, smart canes, etc.”
“The eligibility is that the person should have a disability certificate of more than 40% and these people will be allotted equipments, which will be given to them in three months." said Haaziq.
Haaziq said there was also a special unique counter for Unique Disabilities ID Card at the camp.
"This Unique Disability ID (UDID) card is being given to person with disabilities and the validity of the card will be across India. Since every disabled person may not have access to internet, we are collecting data and we will upload it online.”
“The data will be verified by GMC, IPHB, Hospicio and Azilo hospitals and after verification, the union ministry will print a UDID card and send it to the beneficiaries,"said Haaziq.
He informed that through the assistance of the social welfare minister, staff from the social welfare department, BDO, panchayats, GMC, rehabilitation centre, and anganwadi workers were also present to help the disabled persons with any help for registration.
A visibly moved Naik said this was the best program in his entire political career.
"I have worked for the disabled in my constituency but when it comes to a program at state level, I have been touched that we can do something for people with disabilities thorough such initiatives.”
“I have directed that the program reach out to maximum people and not even a single person be left out anywhere because of any reason including lack of transport. I have never felt so good about any program as much as I feel today to help people with disabilities," said Naik.
