Discharge of waste water in drains: MMC cracks whip

An agitated Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai has asked the Urban Health Centre to invoke the provisions of the Public Health Act and seal the premises of the restaurants releasing waste water in the storm water drain near the BSNL office.

MARGAO

The MMC Chairperson was visibly upset when she came across the waste water from the restaurants and business establishments flowing into the storm water drain, which was being cleaned up by the Civic body following pleas by the local residents.
No sooner the storm water drain was cleaned up of the tons of waste and dirt, accumulated over the years, fresh waste water from the
business establishment started flowing into the drain, prompting the MMC
Chairperson to request the Urban Health Centre to invoke the provisions of the Public Health Act.
“This is totally unacceptable. How can the business establishments and restaurants discharge their waste water in the public drain, more so when the Municipality has cleaned up the drain after spending huge money and manpower”, Babita questioned, saying the time has come to crack a whip against the illegal discharge of waste water in the public drains.
The MMC Chairperson pointed out that unless the Health authorities initiate action by discontinuing power and water supply to the erring establishments, things will not change for the better.
