CANACONA
The carcass of a whale, about 15 metres long, was washed ashore on Polem beach early Wednesday morning.
On getting foul smell emanating from the beach side, residents walked to the shore to find huge chunks of whale carcass getting tossed by the waves. On closer scrutiny, the residents realized that it belonged to a dead whale, which was highly decomposed and disintegrated into four pieces.
At the look of the carcass, people assumed the whale had perhaps died a fortnight ago, before it washed ashore, disintegrated into pieces.
"There are two big pieces and two small ones with a diameter of atleast 6.5 m each, fallen apart at four different areas on Polem beach," informed a resident named Manoj.
Forest officials visited the shore and conducted inspection of the dead whale and took the remains in its possession. According to sources, arrangements are being made to bury the carcass on the shore itself to avoid further infestation of the surroundings, which incidentally has residential houses in close proximity. Sources said as the carcass is in highly decomposed state, even a postmortem may not find the cause of death. It is suspected that it may have been hit by a big ship.
