As part of the preparations to gear up for the third Covid wave in the state, the South Goa district Covid hospital has received a CT-scan to serve the purpose.
Work on the installation of the CT-scan in the district hospital is presently underway and the same is expected to be commissioned after some tests by the agencies.
District hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Deepa Correia said Covid patients admitted to the hospital will be scanned in the hospital itself once the CT-scan facility once it is fully commissioned.
Outlining the steps initiated by the hospital to put the system in place to meet the possible third wave, Dr Correia said the district hospital is almost geared up for the third wave by putting in place the logistics required to meet the situation. “Our logistics are in place. Given that the third wave is likely to affect the children, we have upgraded the pediatric facilities in the hospital. Right now, the focus is on human resources, by conducting training and other activities as part of measures on capacity building”, she said.
Before her transfer after promotion as deputy Director Hospicio Sr Pediatrician Dr Ira Almeida along with Dr Deepa Correia has toned up the pediatric infrastructure in the hospital by commissioning 61-bedded ward, a seven-bedded (High Dependency Unit (HDU) and 12-bedded Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU) in the hospital.
To a question, Dr Correia said that Hospicio has not yet received any reply from the government over the request to shift the Hospicio operations to the new district hospital. “Right now, the GSIDC is carrying out work in the district hospital. Only after the work is completed and the building handed over in all respects, Hospicio will ask the government to shift all the operations to the new district hospital in the event the predicted third COVID does not hit the state.

36 patients in District Hospital
MARGAO: Hazard a guess! How many patients was the 568-bedded South Goa district hospital playing host on Wednesday?
Well, only 36 patients in the imposing hospital building, which was upgraded to cater to the growing number of patients during the second wave.
Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Deepa Corriea said the hospital had only 36 patients as on Wednesday, attributing the present situation to the declining Covid positivity rate in the state.
‘As on Wednesday noon, the South Goa district hospital had only 36 patients’, Dr Correia said.
A glance at the Covid bed availability in the state showed that while the South Goa district hospital has around 18 ICU beds, as many as 13 ICU beds were found vacant in the hospital as on Wednesday noon.
Uptick in cases reported
at Margao Health Centre
MARGAO: The number of Covid positive cases reported at the Margao Urban Health centre crossed the 100-figue mark in the last 24 hours.
Total number of active Covid cases at the Margao Urban Health Centre was pegged at 103 on Wednesday. The cases on Tuesday was put at around 88, suggesting that around 15 new cases were reported at the centre during the last 24 hours.
A glance at the statistics dished out by the Health department revealed that the number of active Covid cases at the Margao UHC was hovering in the 80s before the cases crossed the 100-figure mark on Wednesday.
The statistics further revealed that the number of Covid cases at other PHCs in Salcete was well under control. While the Balli PHC reported 28 active cases, Navelim had only 16 cases. Neighbouring Chinchinim PHC had around 24 cases, while Curtorim reported 33 cases.
