Distressed man rescued after jumping from Galgibaga bridge

CANACONA

A 28-year-old man attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Galgibaga bridge on Sunday morning at 10:45 am but fell into shallow water and became stuck in the mud of the Galgibaga river.

A local resident witnessed the fall and alerted the police and Drishti Life-Savers from the nearby beach.

Initially thought to have injured his legs, the police later confirmed he was unharmed and was eventually handed over to his parents.

At the time, the tide was low, with water beginning to rise.

The river’s centre is a few metres deep, but near the banks, the water is only knee-deep.

The man landed in shallow water, causing his legs to become half-buried in the mud, making it impossible for him to escape.

He was pulled out of the mud and taken to the CHC, where he was declared safe. Sources reported that the distressed man had been seen walking along the beach before jumping from the bridge.

Drishti Life-Savers, including Capt Ganpati and Incharge Mayur alias Parshuram Pagui, rescued him and handed him to the police.

Sarvesh Pednekar, 28, from Shristhal, was safely returned to his parents, who took him home.
