MARGAO
Margao Municipal staff and employees may have something to cheer about as the civic body has credited their salaries for the month of October on Monday.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the administration has ensured that the staff and employees of the Margao Municipal Council well on time ahead of the Diwali festivities.
He further said the Municipality is trying its best to clear the wages of the daily wage workers in the next two days to ensure they too receive the pay packets at least on the eve of Diwali.
The Chief Officer informed that the file towards the payment of staff salaries was cleared by him on Monday, adding that the office has credited the salary in the accounts of the employees. Unlike last month, the Chief Officer said the steady flow of revenue from house tax and trade licence over the last few days following an intensive tax collection drive has brought in revenue close to Rs 2 crore.
“The Municipality had adequate revenue in its coffers to foot the salary bill of the employees. We are now on the job to arrange the funds to clear the wages of the daily wage workers,” he added.
Margao Municipal staff and employees normally receive their salaries on the last day of the month. However, the employees had to wait till mid-October for September salary as the coffers had run empty for want of revenue recoveries.
“If the Municipality goes about the exercise in recovering the tax arrears, there should be no problem in the payment of salaries of staff and employees and the wages of the daily wage workers on time,” Agnelo added.
