A fire accident completely gutted a gift items shop in the Mapusa market on Monday morning.
The gift shop located on the ground floor of the Cosmos building at Morod caught fire which soon spread to its mezzanine floor causing a loss of around Rs 15 lakh.
According to the fire department, a call about the blaze was received at around 12.07 am early Monday morning, following which a fire tender was rushed to the spot.
“When the fire tender reached the spot, the shop on the ground floor was on fire and later spread to the mezzanine floor,” said Mapus Fire Incharge, Bosco Ferrao.
He said firemen were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjoining shops with a timely response call.
The operation to douse the blaze took around one hour.
A total of two fire tender and 10 fire fighters were on the spot to bring the fire under control, the fire officer said.
The exact reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained although short circuit is suspected to be the primary cause for the fire.
“We will write to the electricity and police departments to investigate whether the fire was due to short circuit or arson,” Ferrao said.
