MARGAO
The district police and authorities have called for a joint meeting of members of the Hindus and Muslim to discuss the issues in order to restore peace and amity at the Rumdamol housing board and surrounding areas.
After hundreds of members of Hindu organisations took out a march from Margao before culminating at the communally sensitive Rumdamol housing board on Sunday, leaving the area on the edge, district Police chief, SP Pankaj Kumar Singh, IPS has called a meeting of members of the two communities on Tuesday morning.
While confirming of his initiative to bring the warring groups at the negotiating table to resolve all issues across the table, SP Pankaj, however, said the police would deal firmly if anyone tries to vitiate the atmosphere and disturb peace. “The meeting has been called to discuss the issues that has triggered communal tension at the Housing Board last week and in Margao on Sunday. Let us wait and see what the members of the two communities have to say,” he said.
The joint meeting called by the SP, South comes against the backdrop of the communal clashes witnessed at the Rumdamol housing board the previous Sunday and the tension that rent the air in the commercial capital and at the Housing board last Sunday evening.
The joint meeting also assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the Maina-Curtorim police making a fervent plea to the police and district authorities to call for a joint meeting of the two communities, as the men-in-uniform did not rule out the possibility of communal tension at the Housing Board in the coming days.
Sources said the district authorities have also decided to call a meeting of members of the two communities to ensure peace in the Housing Board.
The rally called up the Hindu organisations in the city here on Sunday was to protest over the raising of pro-Pakistan slogans at Malbhat by members of the minority community. Incidentally, members of the minority community, belonging to an all-India Organisation, has already clarified last week that no pro-Pakistan slogans were raised in Malbhat, and had questioned the authenticity of the video that had gone viral.
Meanwhile, the Margao police has said no case has been registered against anyone in connection with the Sunday march in the city or in connection with the incident where the protestors broke the police cordon before descending In front of the Masjid at Malbhat.
