Even as the failure of the city-based pharmacist to pay the penalty to the Margao civic body within the 24-hour deadline has raised many an eyebrow, the issue has brought to the fore the moot question “ whether all the hospitals, medical stores, and medical institutions located in the commercial capital are handing over the bio-medical waste to the agency for disposal of the waste at the Kundaim industrial estate.
In fact, against the backdrop of the disposal of the bio-medical waste at the Comba dark spot, questions are being raised whether the MMC has conducted any survey of the medical institutions operating in the city and whether they have registered with the agency handling the bio-medical waste at the Kundaim industrial estate.
A civic official told The Goan that the Municipality has no information or knowledge of the number of medical institutions from the city handing over the bio-medical waste to the government appointed agency. The Comba incident wherein the pharmacy had disposed of its bio-medical waste at the dark spot is indeed an eye opener for the civic babus to find out the number of institutions registered with the agency.
