Dog catching van breaks down at Gouliwaddo for lack of maintenance

The Animal Birth Control (ABC) infrastructure and logistics in the commercial capital seemed crumbling with no assistance forthcoming from the civic body.

Monday saw the ageing dog catching van stranded at the Gouliwaddo area of the Margao Municipal Council, leaving the NGO with no option than to shift the cages with dogs in a hired van.

That’s not all. The number of cages at the dog shelter manned by the NGO has not seen any increase over the years, with the MMC defaulting in making available spacious land to expand the ABC programme.

A representative of the NGO informed that the dog catching van first went to the Madel area of the city to collect a couple of strays and headed to Goulliwaddo to attend to another call, when the van broke down. As the vehicle was stranded on the road, the Margao Municipal technical staff is likely to inspect the van only on Tuesday before taking a call whether to tow it to the Municipal garage.

Inquiries revealed that the dog catching van was procured by the Margao Municipal Council way back in the year 2009. The NGO maintained that that dog catching van has been giving trouble for want of proper maintenance over the years. “It’s high time the MMC procures a new dog catching van to streamline the system”, the NGO added.

Similarly, the cages at the dog shelter has stagnated at 20 over the years, even though the NGO have been making a case for increasing the number of cages to meet the growing requirements.

The ground reality, however, appears different.Otherwise, consider this: Curtains will come down on Year 2022 in five days, but the civic body…
