Dog deaths have come back to haunt the animal rights activists as around seven dogs were found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Gogol area of the city.
City-based animal rights activist Sandra Fernandes and other woman knocked on the doors of the Fatorda police station, suspecting foul play in the death of the canines.
The Fatorda police, however, referred the complainants to the department of Animal Husbandry located at Sonsodo to ascertain the exact cause behind the mysterious deaths.
Sandra, however, told The Goan that an Animal Husbandry personnel told them there’s no doctor around to conduct post mortem examination on Sunday being a holiday.
“We were asked to come to the office on Monday. But, since there are no cold storage facilities to preserve dead dogs, we are left with no option but to bury the canines,” Sandra said.
What has raised many an eyebrow amongst the animal rights activists is whether there’s any systematic drive to get rid of the dogs by poisoning. Sandra and other activists had come across a number of dead dogs around the Pajifond area of the city a month ago. Dogs were also done to death at Margao Alto, raising suspicions amongst the animal rights activists whether there’s a systematic campaign to do away with the dogs by poisoning them.
Sandra reminded that the Supreme Court as well as the High Court has banned killing of dogs by shooting or poisoning, with the courts stressing on the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme to reduce the stray dog population.
