The Transport Department has revoked the driving licence of Jagdish Sardessai for six months in connection with last month’s BMW crash at Dona Paula, more than three weeks after issuing him a show-cause notice seeking an explanation as to why his licence should not be suspended or permanently cancelled.
Officials said Sardessai was granted a hearing before the licensing authority before the decision to revoke his licence was taken.
Sardessai is accused of driving a BMW that allegedly rammed into multiple vehicles at Dona Paula. He was booked by the Panaji police for rash and negligent driving and for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
The action comes days after Panaji police wrote to the Transport Department seeking suspension of Sardessai's driving licence in view of the accident.
According to police, CCTV footage showed the BMW being driven at high speed before it allegedly swerved into the right lane, first crashing into a parked jeep and then colliding with an oncoming vehicle. Thereafter, the police had obtained a bond of Rs 75,000 from the accused before releasing him on bail.
